In response to player feedback about increased performance issues in Act 3 after the release of Patch 4, Larian Studios, the developer of Baldur’s Gate 3, is set to launch Patch 5. This upcoming update aims to fix issues caused by Patch 4, addressing concerns from players who found the game unplayable due to severe lag.
Unintended Consequences of Patch 4
The performance problems in Act 3 were traced back to a fix introduced in Patch 4 related to the Scrying Eyes in Moonrise Towers. The fix prevented immediate calls to the guards when stealing, even when players were sneaking or invisible. However, this fix inadvertently led to unnoticed thefts and acts of vandalism accumulating in the game, causing a memory pipeline issue.
Essentially, the game failed to forget about these unnoticed actions, and they remained stuck in the ‘did anyone see me’ pipeline instead of timing out and moving on as intended. This perpetual consideration of theft and violence by the dungeon master caused a memory overload, resulting in slowdown issues.
Patch 5 Fixes and Improvements
Larian Studios has identified and resolved the bug causing these slowdowns, and the fix will be implemented in Patch 5. The upcoming update promises significant improvements and addresses the unintended consequences of the previous patch.
The statement from Larian Studios assures players that Patch 5 is packed with various fixes and enhancements beyond addressing the performance issues caused by Patch 4.
