Kero Blaster: Who you gonna call? The Cleanup Frog!

Kero Blaster is an indie title that I recently played and beat in normal mode that I thoroughly enjoyed. The indie game was developed by the same company who made Cave Story+ on steam, so it comes from a pretty good background.

The basic idea of the game is pretty simple in a way, you play as a frog in a side-scrolling  game shooting guns, defeating monsters, and bosses in a few different levels. However there is a lot more in the game as well when it comes to power-ups and more that you can purchase, both gun upgrades and life upgrades. Each time you ‘game over’ you end up in the hospital where you have a chance to buy from the medical store, or if you encounter the store in a level you can shop from both the medical and weaponry ones.  The weapon upgrades are your typical ones, though the max upgrades are very powerful where as if you focus on one early in the game you can most likely make it through the game pretty quickly.  The medical ones are a bit of the usual, though there is one that I find fascinating. The game’s life system runs on a  heart-based hitpoint, plus the usual lives as well. You can add how many lives you have of course, but also you can get a one time use jar that when you run out of hearts on that life it will give you a certain amount of hearts back. It actually reminds me a lot of the ‘guardian angel’ that you can get in League of Legends, where you don’t get all of your life back but you get enough to last  you to make it past the obstacle usually.

Some may say there are ‘only’ 7  levels in the game, however  these aren’t short levels. Many of them have mini-bosses for you to kill, though luckily after you kill them once they don’t reappear, making it a bit easier to get through the level. The length of the last level is one to drive you crazy though, at least it did for me. It took me a very long time to get through it because of how far back it throws you if you get a gameover in the last level.  For many of the levels and areas you can use any of the guns, but certain obstacles require certain ones. For example you have to use the fire gun to kill most of the ice enemies and to destroy the iceblocks. So as you can pick a favorite gun sometimes you will have to switch, luckily you can switch anytime with a push of a button.

I don’t want to reveal too much about the game though, because I highly recommend you guys try it . I had a lot of fun in the game and beat it during my stream,  and when that happened it unlocked a hard mode which I did not check out. The game features replay ability just because of how the difficulty system is. Also the graphics are simple ones, but I enjoy them, they remind me of older 8  bit games.  There are some frustrating areas but nothing game breaking, and nothing that stopped me from playing the game. So to sum it all up, this game is a great buy especially with the controller support! So check it out on steam for 9.99!

Don’t Starve Together, Twitch Integration

dst character select

When you have played Don’t Starve, especially Don’t Starve Together, a lot it can get a bit old after a while because its the same basic concept constantly. One way you can get over this issue by using mods in the game, most of the time I used character mods to have special challenges pop up however there is a new mod that is absolutely amazing if you  use Twitch.

The mod is called ‘Twitch Plays Together‘ and it is utter chaos depending on what versions you get. The basic idea of this mod is that your viewers on twitch can vote for something to happen to you. One good thing about it is you can set how many votes it requires in case  its something very tragic that you need to make harder to get. In the basic version of the mod, the main one, is very simple with a small amount of voting things. The actions they can vote on is one to make you big,  to  make things slippery,  to cause insanity,  drop rocks from the sky, shrink the player, and making frogs rain down. All of these are temporary actions luckily so your sanity will bounce back and your size will return to normal, the size mainly affects your speed otherwise its just amusing to see the size change. The add on mod Rezecib’s Twitch Plays Together Action Pack ,which requires the first to use it,  has quite a few things added that your viewers can vote on, which are harsher and also affect the people playing it. The ones  that affect everyone one  are options to change it to fall, winter, spring, summer, or always dark for a day.  There are also options that spawns mobs or affect your character including a way to freeze your character for a moment, spawn angry bees that despawn after a bit, teleport you away, spawn  a mob  such as koalefant or something worse, spawning hounds that don’t seem to despawn,  spawning a bunch of Krampus, forgetting the map for the day, rotting your food, randomly does a spell, worse frog rain, sets you personally on fire, spawning spiders, and even spawning helpful pigs. One that is really nice that seems to very rarely come up is ‘mercy’ which will revive the ghost and give them some nice healing items usually, but I swear that one rarely comes up at a good moment.

You would think that having this going on wouldn’t be too detrimental to your gameplay, however I found out very quickly that even the viewers I always have will jump at the chance to try to kill me quickly in the game. Usually we would split up at the beginning and look for a place with beefalos to set up a camp, however we learned pretty quickly that splitting up was a terrible idea. We definitely made use of the touchstones we found during the game, it was almost impossible for my friend and I  to live very long in the game. The longest we lasted in the game was 10 days, where we usually reach winter easily with no or just one or two deaths. This way of playing the game is very difficult at times but it adds a whole new chaotic way to play such a fun game, definitely creating quite a bit of replay-ability because the chaos is always different depending on what options come up during gameplay. I highly recommend checking out these  mods as they are amazing, and I hope they will be updating them and adding more actions that could happen during it.
