Hello everybody, Sean Strife here and I've decided to forgo this week's Forgotten Gem to talk about a game that actually came out a couple days ago: Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon was released by Ubisoft on May 1st, and is a stand-alone expansion on Far Cry 3. The only thing Far Cry 3 and Blood Dragon have in common is they have similar gameplay and similar animals. That's about it, and no, Far Cry 3 is not needed to be able to play this (I myself don't own Far Cry 3, so that's proof). Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is a loving nod to the 80's in multiple ways, but primarily the cheesy 80's b-movie sci-fi action movies and stars Michael Biehn (best known for playing Kyle Reese in the original Terminator and Corporal Dwayne Hicks in Aliens) voices Rex "Power" Colt (an 80's action movie protagonist name if I ever heard one), a Mark IV cyber-commando sent on a mission to take out his former superior, Sloan, who had gone rogue on the US government.

    The Pros:
    • The 80's aesthetic is a nice contrast from the usual million shades of grey and brown we usually get from first person shooters these days, opting instead for a very colorful 80's neon scheme.
    • The side missions are actually a lot of fun, whether it's hunting down things like old TVs and VHS tapes or trying to kill 2 of each animal in a fucked up Noah's Ark kinda way.
    • The voice acting is fittingly 80's: over-the-top, cheesy and comically macho one-liners and doesn't take itself seriously in the slightest.
    • The upgrading system for your weapons is amazing: you can take a normal sniper rifle and turn it into a long-range grenade launcher, a shotgun and turn it into a quadruple barrel fire blaster, a regular old pistol and turn it into Robocop's gun, and a standard rifle into something out of the old GI Joe cartoon. YO JOE!
    • The easter eggs are a LOT of fun, including one that is a nod to cultural touchstone of the 80's: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I will not spoil anything.
    • The game also makes fun of a lot of things in video games these days: like flag collecting (except with the old TVs and VHS tapes and what not) to the opening tutorial mission... you will laugh your ass off at the opening tutorial mission.
    • One of the most fistpumpingly awesome final battles to ever happen in a video game.
    • In short, this is everything Duke Nukem Forever should have been. 2K, Gearbox, if you guys decide to revisit the Duke Nukem franchise, play this game and take notes because you're gonna need them.

    The Cons:
    • The story mission itself is EXTREMELY short
    • There are some minor graphical glitches here in there, but nothing game-breaking.
    • On the PC version, there seems to be a slight problem with the voice acting in that it won't play. Hopefully this gets addressed because the voice acting I heard in other videos has been outright hilarious.

All in all, despite it's flaws, I have to give this game a five out of five. While, again, the story mission is extremely short, the game itself is definitely worth the 15 bucks, and I hope there are sequels to this that not only expand on the universe, but also gives us a longer story because, frankly, this game leaves you wanting more. If this is the birth of a new franchise, I fully embrace it and it's neon 80's glory.

I suppose if one picture best sums up the game, it's this:

Yeah, this pretty much sums up the game. I'm Sean Strife, and I'm off to see The Wizard.

Well first thing I got to say about this app is, TAKES TOO LONG TO DOWNLOAD! Okay not really it just felt like forever because it would say it was 18 minutes left 10 minutes would go by and it would say about 12 minutes left. Such an annoying thing but the Wii U's download and process time is a completely different problem to begin with and doesn't really deal with this review.

Once I finally got the game open, I was really happy with what came up. The intro was cute and you have most the skills that you had in Origins at the end to begin with from what I've seen so that is great. It was simple to pick it up and play, though sadly if you are playing one player you gotta use the tablet controller which really sucks. I'm still not sure what I think of that controller, it feels awkward at times and the looking between the screen at random times can be difficult. I think I would prefer the screen having the game the whole time or none at all, but I can understand why it needs it at times at least. Anyway in the main part of the app there are 3 different maps to play, the main thing to do in these is to save the Teensies and capture lums of course. Instead of the random large lums like in Origins that made all lums red for a period time, these lums are gold with the first one in a chain being purple. If you collect the lums in order in the chain each one becomes purple making it a lot easier to collect lums to begin with. This game seems to have a lot more lums in it, in Origins it had about 350 in each level typically but two of the three maps had at least 500 possible lums. The levels are like Origin levels, a fun platform style and challenging but not too challenging to play. However in the first level there is an annoying part where the tablets screen shows the video and you play as Murfy on the touch screen, while one of the characters you can play as runs on autopilot responding to what Murfy moves and such. As I mentioned before the first two levels have a lot of lums, the third however has less and I must say is my absolute favorite. I wish I had a way to capture gameplay on the Wii U, if I did I would play through it to show you however I'll just show you WiiFolderJosh's gameplay he uploaded on youtube.

Before you ask, yes that is the music that is in that level. The develolpers timed the music to the gameplay because its a level you are constantly moving in, kind of like the living dead world in Origins but much much cooler. I already new Rayman Legends was going to be a fun game, but the last level on the challenge App, Castle Rock, just seals the deal for me.

Now you may be wondering, why its called the 'challenge' app. Well that is very simple, because there is a challenge mode in the game. Its a wii u exclusive map, Murfy's Dungeon, and there are two different challenges you can do. There is a weekly challenge and a daily challenge unlocked right off the bat. In these if you beat people around the world you can get certain cups, these cups will give you awesomeness levels from what I understand. (Haven't had a chance to see if I won or not) Once you get a certain awesomeness level, level2 and level 7, you unlock two more challenges. I don't know what these consist of yet but the weekly challenge last week was to be the fastest to get 150 lums in Murfy's Dungeon where you are controlling murfy again with the main character being on autopilot. The daily challenge was a 'get the farthest' version of Murfy's Dungeon where I believe the map was endless considering how long it was going on for the top people. These are both fun challenges to do, however I do have a bit of a complaint when it comes to the challenges. When you go to a challenge to try it, which you can do as many times as you like, it'll bring up people who are near your level that you can 'beat' . They don't show the leaderboard on the TV screen you actually have to look at the tablet to get the full leaderboard and I'm not sure why they didn't make it visible on both. There is another challenge though its more of a challenge for yourself and gives things replay value. For each time you play your lums add up outside the maps, then as you get certain numbers (3k being the first) you unlock characters you can play as. The girl seen in the video above I believe is one of your starting characters, along with a teensie, globox, and of course Rayman himself.

This app is a free app on the Wii U and truthfully it is wonderful and definitely going to be played often until the full game comes out this September in America (in Europe its the end of August) . I definitely recommend getting it if you have or get a Wii U at some point!

Most people know about the scribblenauts game where you write down an object and it appears in the game. They always say you can't created licensed characters and such, however in the last game Scribblenauts Unlimited there was Nintendo characters available to use. You can create Mario characters and Zelda ones as well, all of them acting a lot like how they should in their own games. There is news popping up about a new character license for the 5th game they come out with. It is being said that WB has given them permission to use DC characters in the next scribblenauts games. However they are taking it even farther then just the random characters you can create in the game. Its being said the game is based on the DC Universe, where you can help the heroes against villains. May sound boring but the thing is you can get a bit ridiculous with your answers, meaning you could go against Batman wishes and use dynamite on the Joker and probably still get credit for doing it.

They are saying the game will be announced at E3 2013 and the plans for it may change, but I can't see them fully getting away from the premise that has already been said just because not using a license that could make their fanbase grow would be stupid. So far its been reported that the game will focus in Gotham and Atlantis, with several characters from those areas including: harley quinn, killer croc, clayface, mister freeze, batman, robin, batgirl, aquaman, and black manta. I'm a batman fanatic as you guys probably know, but I'm hoping they will also have metropolis in the game..Of course I think it would be fun to randomly save Lois Lane before superman etc. Also I'm wondering if you can make the heros zombies like you can in other games, would they just be regular zombies or run along the lines of the blackest night arc. If they include the green lantern, which they really should, then they should definitely have a kid friendly version of the blackest night stuff in the game.

I got on my twitter today and checked through the last few tweets and then I saw it. ARKHAM ORIGINS ANNOUNCED along with a link! I had to click it of course, after all I am a Batman nut and have been dying to know about this game. The link actually led to the video below:

For those who don't want to go to IGN's site or watch the video here's the basic deal. Arkham Origins is a prequel as what has been hinted at for so long, and we'll be seeing many villains we knew of before. As much as I want a sequel to Arkham City, this can be an amazing game to begin with. For one thing Mark Hamill never fully retired his part as the Joker, he had always said that if something even more epic comes along he would voice it. He couldn't see doing something that was sub-par after the first two Arkham Games. They say in this game you'll be playing as a less experienced batman, which could mean several things, as long as they don't mess with the fighting style I think I'll be fine. If they made things harder to hack or there being a possibility of him missing when he tries to grapple something, that would be amazing it would add realism to the game itself. So so far we have a prequel game with an inexperienced batman. The question I'm wondering about is, is it batman alone? Or will there be others such as Robin or eve Batgirl, if it is set before Arkham Asylum I could see it being before Barbara got shot. Heck I could see this even happening in the game itself, adding in the creation of Oracle would be an amazing thing to add in. The game isn't being created by Rocksteady sadly, but it is being done by Warner Brothers Montreal and they have access to pretty much everything Rocksteady use so hopefully there wont' be much of a change to the gameplay. It's slated to come out October 25th this year on the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC. Oh and did I mention, THIS IS NOT THE ONLY GAME!? Also set to come out on the same day is Arkham Origins: Blackgate which is a game for handhelds, it's suppose to come out for the PS Vita and 3ds, the only thing known about it is the fact it'll be set right after the Arkham Origin game. So you can do what I'm going to do, preorder both play through Origins, be sad it ended for a split second before you start playing the handheld game!

When more information comes along I'll definitely share it guys, now that the game has been announced I'll be looking for more information!

I'm not sure how we missed this, but this appeart to be truth! I hope for the sake of all gamers it's not what happens. Take a read below and lets see what you think.

Oh no, there's been rumors that the new XBox is going to block the ability to play used games, these rumors have been around for a while now, actually. There were rumors the PS4 was gonna do the same thing, and while it's not gonna block it, there is a caveat that Sony's being quiet about which is rather unsettling. gothtini thinks it has to do with the Cloud they're pushing, but other possibilities could include you having to pay an additional fee just to be able to play your used game.

I actually would not put that past Microsoft or Sony for that matter: I love video games and all, but while we have some of the best games coming out, they are unfortunately being tied to some of the absolute worst and anti-consumer business practices in history: on-disc DLC (too many examples to list here), microtransactions that will little by little become the norm (EA's already talking about shoehorning microtransactions into all of their games from here on out), 10 dollar online passes for used games, draconian DRM that requires you to be online at all times just to be able to play it (Diablo 3 and anything from Ubisoft come to mind here), misleading demos to hype up sales when the game winds up being nothing like the final product (Aliens: Colonial Marines and Killzone 2 come to mind here), homogenizing their successful IPs and running them into the ground until people are sick of them (Activision is especially guilty here with Guitar Hero and Call of Duty is on the same slipperly slope), and recently, companies have started charging preorders for preorders.
